Special Announcement from Dixie on the status of Babcock Bench!

An Email Message From Dixie
Subj: No Bison on Babcock Bench/Pediocactus wins!
Date: 2/24/2005 11:00:58 P.M. Pacific Standard Time

The U.S. Dept. of Interior Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has denied a change of grazing permit from cattle to bison for Jon Bishop on the Babcock Bench area in Grant County, Washington. Several very concerned individuals along with myself have been fighting the attempt to change the permit for over a year.

The presence of the Pediocactus nigrispinus was an important reason for the denial. To my knowledge this is the first time in Washington State that a permit has been denied in at least part because of the presence of any cactus. The BLM also acknowledges that the “Hedgehog” cactus is Pediocactus nigrispinus and that it is a species of concern.

I consider this a great win for Fritz Hochstaetter and all of us who have spent so much time and effort and faced so many adversaries in effort to get the people of Washington State to realize that our Pediocactus are NOT simpsonii and that they do deserve to be protected. Dixie
